GRAYS PEAK

Grays Peak Trail Guided Hike – Big Bear Lake

Miles

7.4 (round trip)

Elevation

7,920

Gain

1,130 ft

Difficulty

moderate

Length

3-4 hours

Step into the quiet beauty of the north shore of Big Bear Lake with a Grays Peak Trail guided hike. This moderate adventure offers an ideal mix of forest cover, steady climb, and rewarding viewpoints, all led by a local guide who know the terrain inside out.

The hike begins just off North Shore Drive, winding upward through shaded pine and fir forests. As you climb, your guide points out natural features and local wildlife, making the journey both informative and immersive. Midway, the forest opens up to wider vistas, and near the top you’ll be treated to sweeping views of Big Bear Lake and the surrounding mountains—a satisfying payoff for your effort.

With roughly 1,000 feet of elevation gain over about 7 miles round-trip, the trail provides a solid challenge that doesn’t require advanced mountaineering skills. It’s perfect for hikers who want more than a stroll but aren’t looking for extreme difficulty.

Please note: This trail is located in Jackie’s and Shadow’s habitat. Jack and Shadow are our beloved resident bald eagles who became famous when they went viral in 2023.

Thanks to the Friends of Big Bear Valley and the streaming camera they have on their nest, viewers were privileged to observe this pair incubate their eggs through a particularly harsh El Nino winter.

Grays Peak is closed annually from early December through late June or early July while our local celebrities return to their nest to raise a new little family. However, a little birdie told us that if you go to the Big Bear Discovery Center, you can sometimes view them from off the back deck.

Whether you join one of our small-group public hikes or book a private outing tailored to your pace, this hike allows you to explore less-traveled terrain on the lake’s quieter side.

Trail Highlights

  • Approximately 7 miles round-trip with ~1,000 ft elevation gain.
  • Lush, shaded forest sections giving way to open ridges.
  • Impressive lake and mountain views from the summit area.
  • Guided outing led by a local expert (perfect for someone stepping up from a beginner hike.)
